{"id":12907,"date":"2011-02-23T11:38:26","date_gmt":"2011-02-23T11:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.hostduplex.com\/?p=229"},"modified":"2011-02-23T11:38:26","modified_gmt":"2011-02-23T11:38:26","slug":"how-to-install-xenserver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/blog\/how-to-install-xenserver\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Install XenServer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To begin installation of XenServer you&#8217;ll want download the latest <a title=\"Citrix XenServer Download\" href=\"http:\/\/www.citrix.com\/English\/ss\/downloads\/results.asp?productID=683148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Citrix XenServer Install CD<\/a>, any supplemental packs, and XenCenter.\u00a0 You may have to login to download the ISO files.\u00a0 We recommend using PowerISO or any other burning utility that can verify your disc.<\/p>\n<p>To install Citrix XenServer, there are a few requirements that must be met.\u00a0 Your server must include at least 2GB of RAM.\u00a0 The processor must be a minimum of 1.5GHz, and support virtualization (Intel\u00ae VT or AMD-V\u2122 required for support of Windows guests).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You may want to review the <a title=\"XenServer System Requirements\" href=\"http:\/\/www.citrix.com\/English\/ps2\/products\/subfeature.asp?contentID=1681139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">XenServer System Requirements<\/a>.\u00a0 Our test machine for this how-to is a Dell PowerEdge 1950.\u00a0 Before installation begins, you should <strong>enable virtualization <\/strong>within your BIOS.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Begin by booting your computer and entering BIOS.\u00a0 On our machine that is the F2 key:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dell-poweredge-1950.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-230\" title=\"dell-poweredge-1950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dell-poweredge-1950.png\" alt=\"Dell PowerEdge 1950 XenServer Install\" width=\"718\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Move to the applicable category, CPU Information in our case:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dell-poweredge-1950-cpu-information.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-232\" title=\"Dell PowerEdge 1950 CPU Information\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dell-poweredge-1950-cpu-information.png\" alt=\"Dell PowerEdge 1950 CPU Information\" width=\"721\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 <strong>Enable <\/strong>Virtualization Technology:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/enable-virtualization.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-234\" title=\"Enable Virtualization Technology\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/enable-virtualization.png\" alt=\"Enable Virtualization Technology\" width=\"722\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Save and Reboot.\u00a0 Ensure your disc in the drive and make sure you boot from your CD drive.\u00a0 If your server doesn&#8217;t have a cd\/dvd drive, you may have to use an external drive.<\/p>\n<p>When you boot from the CD, you should reach the XenServer installation screen. Press Enter once you reach the screen below to continue with installation.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-installation-screen.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-235\" title=\"XenServer Installation Screen\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-installation-screen.png\" alt=\"XenServer Installation Screen\" width=\"641\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n5.\u00a0 You should reach the screen asking you to choose your keymap.\u00a0 Choose your keyboard layout and continue&#8230; in our case, [qwerty] us<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 The next screen will ask if you need to load a device driver.\u00a0 Since we are using a Dell PERC card, it isn&#8217;t required in our case. Click OK and continue.<\/p>\n<p>7. Read the EULA and continue<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 Choose the disk you would like to use for your Virtual Machine Storage and click OK to continue.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE:\u00a0 If your drive\/volume is larger than 2TB, then you will have to create a partition that is less than 2TB for the XenServer hypervisor.\u00a0 If you are using RAID 10 and a PERC card (as we have before), Dell&#8217;s PERC Configuration tool does not allow for 2 separate RAID 10 partitions.\u00a0 Since Dell&#8217;s PERC Card is a rebranded LSI card, you can create the 2 separate partitions using LSI&#8217;s MegaRAID software.\u00a0 If you are using a PERC 5\/i or 6\/i you can download it under the <a title=\"LSI MegaRAID SAS 8408E Adapter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lsi.com\/obsolete\/megaraid_sas_8408e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LSI MegaRAID SAS 8408E Adapter<\/a>.\u00a0 or here: <a title=\"LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager for Windows\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lsi.com\/lookup\/License.aspx?url=\/DistributionSystem\/User\/AssetMgr.aspx?asset=51146&amp;prodName=MegaRAID%20SAS%208408E%20&amp;subType=Miscellaneous&amp;locale=EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager for Windows <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/virtual-machine-storage.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-238\" title=\"XenServer Install Virtual Machine Storage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/virtual-machine-storage.png\" alt=\"XenServer Install Virtual Machine Storage\" width=\"722\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0 Choose your Installation Source.\u00a0 In our case, we are using a CD so we choose Local Media.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-installation-source.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-239\" title=\"XenServer Installation Source\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-installation-source.png\" alt=\"XenServer Installation Source\" width=\"723\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0 It will now ask you if you would like to install any supplemental packs.\u00a0 If you plan on installing any Linux VMs, it is a good idea to install the Linux Supplemental Packs.\u00a0 There are also other supplemental packs that you can install.\u00a0 For example, Dell has OpenManage software that can be and installed easily using the <a title=\"Dell OpenManage XenServer Supplemental Pack\" href=\"http:\/\/ftp.dell.com\/sysman\/OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-LX-6.4.0-1266.XenServer56_A00.12.iso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenManage supplemental pack<\/a>. We will choose Yes at this screen since we are installing the Linux Supplemental Pack.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-supplemental-packs.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-240\" title=\"XenServer Supplemental Packs\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-supplemental-packs.png\" alt=\"XenServer Supplemental Packs\" width=\"723\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>11.\u00a0 It now asks us to verify the installation source.\u00a0 This is highly recommended to ensure a proper install.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/verify-installation-source.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-243\" title=\"Verify Installation Source\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/verify-installation-source.png\" alt=\"Verify Installation Source\" width=\"721\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It will begin by verifying your XenServer installation disc:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/verifying-xenserver-installation-source.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-244\" title=\"Verifying XenServer Installation Source\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/verifying-xenserver-installation-source.png\" alt=\"Verifying XenServer Installation Source\" width=\"722\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>The next page will display if there were any issues with verification.\u00a0 If verification was successful you may continue, otherwise you may to try burning your disc again.<\/p>\n<p>12. Choose a root password for your server.\u00a0 This is the password used when connecting to the XenServer host from XenCenter.<\/p>\n<p>13.\u00a0 Choose which ethernet card you would like to designate for managing your server.\u00a0 Since our ethernet cord is plugged into the first ethernet port on our Dell server we will choose eth0.\u00a0 Eth1 shows no link because there is nothing connected to the second ethernet port on the server.\u00a0 Your server may only show one interface if you have only one card.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/management-interface.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-245\" title=\"Host Management Interface\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/management-interface.png\" alt=\"Host Management Interface\" width=\"723\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>14.\u00a0 Choose DHCP or enter your Static IP information:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-ip-address.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-246\" title=\"XenServer IP Address\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/xenserver-ip-address.png\" alt=\"XenServer IP Address\" width=\"723\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>15.\u00a0 Continue by choosing a hostname.\u00a0 Unless you chose DHCP, you will also be asked to enter to your DNS Nameservers.<\/p>\n<p>16.\u00a0 Choose the geographical area your server is in, and then select the City.<\/p>\n<p>17. Next you will be asked to enter the time or choose an NTP server.\u00a0 I recommend using NTP. I recommend the following NTP servers:<br \/>\ntime.nist.gov<br \/>\ntime-b.nist.gov<br \/>\ntime.windows.com<\/p>\n<p>18.\u00a0 Install XenServer:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/install-xenserver.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-247\" title=\"Install XenServer\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/install-xenserver.png\" alt=\"Install XenServer\" width=\"721\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n19.\u00a0 Now that the installation has completed, it asks for any supplemental packs. Now would be a good time to insert your Linux Supplemental pack and press OK:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/insert-supplemental-pack.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-250\" title=\"Insert Supplemental Pack\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/insert-supplemental-pack.png\" alt=\"Insert Supplemental Pack\" width=\"722\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>20.\u00a0 We recommend verifying your installation source in order to test the media.
