{"id":12906,"date":"2011-01-25T19:16:09","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T19:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.hostduplex.com\/?p=220"},"modified":"2023-10-20T09:57:29","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T09:57:29","slug":"53-crucial-internet-marketing-and-seo-terms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/blog\/53-crucial-internet-marketing-and-seo-terms\/","title":{"rendered":"53 Crucial Internet Marketing and SEO Terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re reading this blog, there&#8217;s a good chance that you&#8217;re either an internet marketer, or part of a dev team. \u00a0The problem with these two people, is that usually, they don&#8217;t know each other&#8217;s jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Situation: <\/strong>John Marketer goes to Susan Developer about a technical issue. \u00a0Susan Developer spits out tech mumbo jumbo and John Marketer is confused and frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<p>Susan Developer needs to tell John Marketer about a potential problem with SEO, but John Marketer has no idea and writes a blog post full of Google red flags.<\/p>\n<p>This happens more than you think because of a simple disconnect between the two teams. \u00a0Well to fix this problem, I have created a big glossary for you guys to clear up confusion. \u00a0Trust me, you&#8217;ll need this, I still refer back to this everyday. \u00a0You&#8217;re welcome<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Anchor text , anchor link<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0When a word is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clickable <\/a>thus containing a link.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Backlink, back-link<\/strong> \u2013 a link from an outside website (outside source) that redirects to the original website. \u00a0(i.e. the links that point back to your blog)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"link building\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/link-building-e1294354066736.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"377\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Broken link<\/strong> \u2013 a link that fails to connect to it&#8217;s intended destination<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Cloaking <\/strong>\u2013 When a website shows one version to the user and a\u00a0separate falsified version to a\u00a0\u00a0search engine. \u00a0For example, \u00a0showing your users the normal page, and then having the search engines see a keyword stuffed splash page thus boosting your ranking. \u00a0DO NOT DO THIS. \u00a0If a search engine finds out you are employing this black hat SEO practice, you will be severely penalized and potentially\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/4685750.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">banned <\/a>from Google (i.e. BMW Germany and Google)<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Contextual marketing<\/strong> \u2013 Based on what a user searches and which pages he visits, how an advertiser takes that information and markets specifically to that individual.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">6. <strong>Conversion ratio <\/strong>\u2013 This is the number of sales or leads generated divided by the number of visitors to your site. \u00a0Conversion ratio could be applied to any number of business goals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"2010 online holiday sales\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/2010-online-holiday-sales-e1294355687534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"369\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>CSS <\/strong>\u2013 Cascading Style Sheet\u00a0\u2013 Used for programming, this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3schools.com\/css\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">document <\/a>will tell the browser how to display websites.<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Domain Name <\/strong>\u2013 website name\u00a0\u2013 Domain name is or URL (Universal Resource Locator) is a unique \u00a0alphanumeric name and attached to a certain IP address. While every address has an IP address they also have domain names for simplicity. \u00a0(i.e. www.google.com, www.cnn.com)<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>Duplicate Content<\/strong> \u2013 This is when there is similar content on one site and another. Basically I posted this glossary on another blog, so I have created completely new content here for best practice SEO.<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>Email marketing <\/strong>\u2013 business promotion and brand recognition\/management through the use of email contacting. \u00a0While this has worked from some marketers, this has gained a bad reputation because of spammers.<\/p>\n<p>11. <strong>External links<\/strong> \u2013 any links that point to a website<\/p>\n<p>12.<strong> High quality links<\/strong> \u2013 links from highly ranked and relevant websites<\/p>\n<p>13. <strong>Hit <\/strong>\u2013 a single visit to a website from a person or automated program<\/p>\n<p>14. <strong>Host \/ webhost \/ hosting server<\/strong> \u2013 The host or webhost is the company you choose to put your website online. If you need to know more, check our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostduplex.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>15. <strong>HTML<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0Hyper Text Markup Language. \u00a0It is a language of programming used to display websites elements which the browser reads and shows the viewer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"virtual assistant\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/virtual-assistant-e1294356015684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p>\n<p>16. <strong>Impression <\/strong>\u2013 a single view of the web page or an advertisement by the Internet user.<\/p>\n<p>17. <strong>Internal links<\/strong> \u2013 links in a website connect the user to other elements or pages within the\u00a0same\u00a0website.<\/p>\n<p>18. <strong>Internet Marketing<\/strong> \u2013 a broad term, internet marketing refers to the business promotion and brand management of a company through the use of various avenues via the internet.<\/p>\n<p>19.<strong> Internet Traffic<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0The number of visitors a website receives<\/p>\n<p>20. <strong>IP address<\/strong> \u2013 Internet Protocol is a unique numeric address identifying any device connected to the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>21. <strong>Delivery <\/strong>\u2013 The use of IP addresses search engines use to show the user local search engine results. \u00a0I.e. when you type in dry cleaners, Oleg&#8217;s cleaners in Moscow doesn&#8217;t appear. \u00a0 This method is being used not only by Google but by many internet marketers.<\/p>\n<p>22. <strong>Keyword <\/strong>\u2013 Popular words employed by search engines to find relevant websites in organic searches.<\/p>\n<p>23. <strong>Keyword Phrase <\/strong>\u2013 Combination of keywords<\/p>\n<p>24. <strong>Keyword stuffing<\/strong> \u2013 Another blackhat SEO practice, this is the overuse of keywords in a page. \u00a0This practice will actually penalize your ranking from the search engines.<\/p>\n<p>25. <strong>Landing Page<\/strong> \u2013 a landing page is a web page designed to be highly relevant to an advertisement or query. \u00a0These are very useful for pay per click advertising.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"starbucks fbml landing page\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/starbucks-fbml-landing-page-e1294356151690.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"315\" \/><br \/>\n26. <strong>Link bait <\/strong>\u2013 Any compelling article or content that brings attention to a website. \u00a0(i.e.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lolcats.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lolcats<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>27. <strong>Link building<\/strong> \u2013 an essential SEO practice, to \u00a0create links to a page and in and around a page to increase conversion ratio and page rank for a search engine results page (SERP).<\/p>\n<p>28. <strong>Link juice<\/strong> \u2013 this refers to the authority of th links that link to your page. \u00a0Different SEO practices are utilized to maximize the &#8216;link juice&#8217; your page obtains. \u00a0For instance, if there is duplicate content, then the 2 pages will share the juice unless you tell the search engine to give one site all of the authority.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"good-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/good-content.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>29. <strong>Long tail keyword <\/strong>\u2013similar to keyword phrase, this is multiples\u00a0permutations\u00a0of keywords to create a search query. \u00a0T<\/p>\n<p>30. <strong>Low quality link<\/strong> \u2013 Links from low-ranked or irrelevant websites. \u00a0Cnn.com is a high quality link, jimbobsblog.com is not<\/p>\n<p>31. <strong>Market analysis<\/strong> &#8211; A broad term, Market Analysis is tthe researching of a market. \u00a0This includes who the potential consumers are, and all aspects of their commercial interests.<\/p>\n<p>32. <strong>Market value<\/strong> &#8211; this expression refers to the expected price obtained for sold goods or services in a given time period.<\/p>\n<p>33. <strong>Meta Description<\/strong>&#8211; This is the short\u00a0description beneath a title tag in a search engine results page. \u00a0There is no need to stuff this with keywords as it does not carry much SEO weight. \u00a0However, with a captivating meta description it can bring more users, which does affect SEO.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"meta\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/meta-e1294097676789.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"359\" \/><\/p>\n<p>34. <strong>Meta tag<\/strong> &#8211; Information enveloped in the head portion of an HTML document. \u00a0Meta tags provide various information about the website to the search engine allowing for better indexing and cataloging.<\/p>\n<p>35. <strong>Nofollow link<\/strong> \u2013 This can be a bit confusing, allow me to clarify. \u00a0This is a meta tag that tells a search engine not to follow (click on) a certain link. \u00a0There&#8217;s certain pages that have duplicate content that need to link juice, like the archives page on your blog. \u00a0You can tell the search engines to not go to these parts of your blog, thus preserving all link authority where it belongs.<\/p>\n<p>36. <strong>Off-page SEO<\/strong> \u2013 \u00a0These are the SEO practices you employ off your page to increase page rank and visibility. \u00a0This includes external link building, link baiting, being active in online communities, and many\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seomoz.org\/ugc\/21offpage-seo-strategies-to-build-your-online-reputation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>37.<strong> On-page SEO<\/strong> \u2013 In contrast to off-page SEO, on-page are the SEO practices you employ directly on your own website. \u00a0This includes title tag optimization, meta description optimization, keyword phrase strategies, internal link building etc.<\/p>\n<p>38. <strong>Organic Search Results <\/strong>\u2013 These are the results that show up through a search. \u00a0For example, Google search &#8216;webhosting&#8217;, and those results were found organically.<\/p>\n<p>39. <strong>Page Rank<\/strong> \u2013 a hypothetical value of a web page. \u00a0In an organic search which entry you are on that page. \u00a0This is very dynamic, and hundreds of factors can determine your rank.<\/p>\n<p>40. <strong>PPC &#8211; Pay-Per-Click<\/strong> \u2013 PPC is an online marketing strategy where a businesses pay based on the traffic they receive. \u00a0Examples of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/accounts\/ServiceLogin?service=adwords&amp;hl=en_US&amp;ltmpl=adwords&amp;passive=false&amp;ifr=false&amp;alwf=true&amp;continue=https:\/\/adwords.google.com\/um\/gaiaauth?apt%3DNone%26ugl%3Dtrue&amp;error=newacct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PPC <\/a>are the advertisements on the right hand side of a SERP in a Google search, or the advertisements you see on facebook.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Google Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakeshorebranding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/Google-ads-e1294357285569.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p>41. <strong>Redirecting <\/strong>\u2013 This is an instruction telling a search engine to go into another page. This is a crucial technique when it comes to fixing duplicate content issues. \u00a0Instead of always creating unique content (which is the best SEO practice), there are times when duplicate content is unavoidable. \u00a0Therefore, by redirecting search engines, you avoid penalties and preserve all link juice.<\/p>\n<p>42. <strong>RSS\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Rich Site Summary- <\/strong> This allows subscribers to get laters updates from a specific website.<\/p>\n<p>43. <strong>Search Engine<\/strong> \u2013 A \u00a0computer program which searches\u00a0internet documents for certain keywords. \u00a0They then index those documents and display those documents in a certain order of results. \u00a0The big three search engines are: Google, Yahoo, and Bing.<\/p>\n<p>44. <strong>Search Engine Marketing\u00a0\u2013 SEM <\/strong>\u2013SEM is a branch of internet marketing that deals with business promotion through the use of search engines. \u00a0 SEM deals with very\u00a0closely\u00a0with SEO to maximize exposure using search engines.<\/p>\n<p>45.
